Biographical Information

Deedra Irwin grew up right outside Green Bay, in Pulaski, Wisconsin, with dreams of becoming an Olympian in track and field. In high school, Irwin picked up skiing as a way to stay in shape between the cross-country season (fall) and the track and field season (spring). Irwin attended Michigan Tech, where she was a three-sport athlete (cross-country skiing, cross-country and track and field).

In 2015, Irwin qualified for the FIS U-23 World Championships in cross-country skiing, where she would meet future U.S. biathlon teammate Joanne Reid, who was also competing. Two years later, Reid convinced Irwin to attend a US Biathlon talent ID camp. Irwin instantly fell in love with biathlon, describing the sport as “ the coolest I’d ever done.”

Irwin made her first FIS World Championship team for Team USA in 2021. She made her Olympic debut at the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022, where Irwin finished seventh in the women’s 15-kilometer individual event, the best finish ever for an American in an individual biathlon event at the Olympics. The seventh-place finish was also Irwin’s best individual result to date.

Off the snow, Irwin joined the Vermont Army National Guard in 2019 and, since 2022, has been a member of the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program (WCAP), which offers all Army members the chance to compete in an Olympic sport.
