Big Air Snowboarders Chris Corning, Hailey Langland Finish Second At U.S. Grand Prix

Two-time Olympic snowboarders Chris Corning and Hailey Langland each scored second-place finishes Saturday in the big air competition at the U.S. Grand Prix, a world cup event in Copper Mountain, Colorado.
In the competition, each rider gets three runs, and their two best runs are used for a total score.
Both Americans put up big scores in their first runs to set the pace early, with corning earning a 92.25 for his back 18 melon and Langland getting 90.25 with a massive cab 10 indy.
Corning put up a strong second run of 80.25, but Norway’s Marcus Kleveland posted 93.25 and 91.00 scores in his second and third runs to top Corning, 184.25 to 172.50, in the men’s event. 
On the women’s side, Langland managed a 61.25 in her second run and finished 4.25 points behind the winning score of 155.75 posted by Mari Fukada of Japan. 
For Corning, it was his second consecutive runner-up finish on the big air world cup circuit, having also finished second last weekend in Edmonton, Alberta.
“It’s a really good start to the season,” said Corning, who previously hadn’t made a world cup podium in the event since 2019. “It is definitely a tough situation because I’m happy to be there, but I’m also not happy at all. It’s two second places in a row that I had a good chance of winning. I’m going to try to figure some stuff out and hopefully bring home a win in the next one.”
A two-time overall world cup winner in big air, Corning won a silver medal at the 2017 world championships, then finished fourth in big air in his Olympic debut in 2018 and seventh at the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022.
Langland earned the second big air world cup podium finish of her career and the first since 2016. It was her first podium in any world cup event since she took second in slopestyle in March 2021. Langland went from the Youth Olympic Winter Games Lillehammer 2016 to her Olympic debut in 2018 at the age of 17, and competed in her second Games in Beijing.
The final big air snowboarding world cup event of the season is set for Jan. 13 and 14, 2023, in Kreischberg, Austria.
