Biographical Information
Paul Schommer grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin. He was a high school wrestler like his father until his father died in a car accident and Schommer at age 15, lost his desire to return to the mat and planned to stop competing in any sport.
A year later, Schommer picked up cross-country skiing because his brother, Phillip, started a cross-country club at their high school. Schommer ended up as a college skier and was an All-American for The College of St. Scholastica (Duluth, Minn.).
His college coach, Chad Salmela, a former member of the U.S. biathlon national team, guided Schommer into the sport. Schommer has been a member of the U.S. biathlon national team since 2017 and competed at the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022, where he was part of a U.S. team that finished seventh in the mixed relay.
Schommer said growing up: "I don't think I ever said I wanted to be an Olympian, I grew up wanting to be a state champion in wrestling. That was a reasonable goal."
