Learned to skate at age 2 but did pursue speedskating until age 10
Conor McDermott-Mostowy grew up in Washington, D.C., and learned to skate at age 2 but “ was never interested in playing hockey or figure skating.” At around age 10, he took up short track speedskating and at age 17 made the move to long track.
Four years later, McDermott-Mostowy made his first U.S. national speedskating team, and the following year, he won his first national title in the 1,000m. In 2025, McDermott-Mostowy would win his first ISU World Cup in team sprint, an event currently not on the Olympic program, with U.S. teammates Cooper McLeod and Zach Stoppelmoor.
After his first national championship in 2021, McDermott-Mostowy chose to speak publicly about being a gay athlete. McDermott-Mostowy said: “As a gay athlete, I think visibility is extremely important. (Sports) is an area in which gay people are underrepresented, and hopefully by seeing more 'out' athletes, more gay people will feel comfortable coming out and participating in sports.”
Off the ice, McDermott-Mostowy graduated from Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minn., with a neuroscience major and plans to attend medical school after he retires from speedskating.
