Biographical Information
Brandon Kim grew up in Fairfax, Virginia, and first watched short track on TV during the Olympic Winter Games Vancouver 2010. Inspired by how fast the skaters were going around the track, he decided at age nine to try speedskating at a local club near his house.
As a junior in high school, Kim won a bronze medal at the World Junior Short Track Speedskating Championships as part of the men’s relay team.
After representing Team USA at two world championships, Kim claimed national titles in all three events (500-meter, 1,000-meter, 1,500-meter) contested at the 2026 U.S. Championships and broke a nearly 13-year-old mark set by three-time Olympian J.R. Celski, racing the men's 500-meter in 39.83 seconds.
Off the track, Kim attends Stanford University, where he balances his studies with limited training, mostly lifting and biking, since the school does not have an on-campus ice rink. He took a year off to prepare for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 while also studying for the MCATs. Upon graduation from Stanford, he plans to attend med school, specializing in orthopedics, like his dad, John, or neurosurgery.
