Abbey Murphy grew up in Evergreen Park, Illinois, in an athletic household. Her mom, Lynne, played college softball, and her two older brothers were college athletes in wrestling and football, respectively.
Murphy became the first one in her family to play ice hockey, starting off at age 6.
By age 15, Murphy was representing Team USA in U18 series vs. Canada and made her debut for U.S. women's hockey team at the 2021 IIHF World Championships.
Murphy was selected for the U.S. women’s hockey team for the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022, where the Americans won a silver medal. Since the Beijing Games, Murphy has represented the United States at three straight world championships (2023-25) winning two gold medals. Murphy attends the University of Minnesota, having helped lead the Golden Gophers to two Frozen Four appearances during her college career.
Off the ice, Murphy enjoys playing Fortnite, rollerblading and longboarding.
