Biographical information

Born and raised in an outdoor-oriented family in the Adirondack Mountains, Tate Frantz began skiing at age 2 and took his first jumps at the Olympic Jumping Complex at age 5. The middle of three athletic brothers, he spent his childhood building bike jumps, cliff jumping and doing flips out of the family tree house. His natural fearlessness and love of flight led him to excel in ski jumping. He originally trained in Nordic combined, which pairs ski jumping with cross-country skiing, but a persistent knee injury at 16 forced him to focus exclusively on ski jumping—a decision that proved transformative for his career.

Frantz's rapid development accelerated after he moved to Norway to access world-class coaching, facilities and training partners. He earned his first world cup points in November 2023 with a 30th-place finish in Ruka, Finland, then improved throughout the season with an 18th-place result in Wisla, Poland, and a 20th-place finish at the Ski Flying World Championships in Kulm, Austria—the best result by an American at ski flying worlds in decades. In 2023, he made his world cup debut in Lake Placid as the youngest competitor in the field, competing in the first world cup held in his hometown in 33 years. He collected the most world cup points in a single season by any U.S. man in history during the 2023-24 campaign, finishing 22nd overall in the world cup standings.

Frantz's ascent accelerated during the 2024-25 season with consistent excellence on the world cup circuit. He opened the season with back-to-back 10th-place finishes in Lillehammer, Norway, marking his eighth career top-10 world cup result. In October 2024, he captured two U.S. National Championship titles in both the small hill and large hill competitions at his home venue in Lake Placid. His success reflects years of dedication and a bold decision at 16 to move alone to Lillehammer to train at NTG, a prestigious sports academy that has sent numerous athletes to the Olympics.

Off the hill, Frantz enjoys mountain biking, trail running and rock climbing.
