Biographical Information
Jason Colby has rapidly ascended to become one of America's most promising ski jumping talents, recently making history with the best world cup finish by a U.S. man in more than two decades. In December 2024, the Steamboat Springs native placed seventh at the world cup in Engelberg, Switzerland, soaring 136.5 meters for his first career top 10 finish. He also solidified his position as the highest-ranked American jumper in the world at No. 26 overall.
Colby earned his first world cup points in November 2024 with a 28th-place finish in Ruka, Finland, fulfilling a personal goal he set to score world cup points by age 19. Earlier that year, at just 17, he made his world cup debut in Sapporo, Japan, as the youngest competitor in the field, finishing 48th. The experience proved invaluable for the young athlete, who described the higher level of competition as markedly different from domestic events.
A longtime member of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, Colby grew up training on the historic Howelsen Hill, where he developed his fearless approach to the sport. In July 2023, he captured the Jumpin' and Jammin' Ski Jumping Extravaganza, a Fourth of July tradition that brings together the nation's top Nordic athletes. His international resume includes competing at the Youth Olympic Winter Games Gangwon 2024 where he finished 17th in the individual boys' event, and representing Team USA at the 2023 and 2024 FIS Freestyle Ski Junior World Championships. In October 2023, Colby recorded a third-place finish at an FIS Cup competition in Rasnov, Romania.
Colby's success reflects the impact of a historic partnership between U.S. Ski & Snowboard and the Norwegian ski jumping federation that began in 2022. The collaboration has provided American athletes access to world-class coaching, training facilities and technical expertise, contributing to a recent surge in U.S. performances on the world cup circuit. Colby competed in his first FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in February 2025 in Trondheim, Norway, and has qualified for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026: his Olympic debut.
