Jakob played competitive youth soccer until 17, when he started training with Piotr Bednarski, with the Loppet Nordic Ski club out of Minneapolis. Realizing that there was alot more opportunity with skiing and biathlon, he changed the focus, and has been training full time for Biathlon since 2012. He practically moved to Grand Rapids after the first couple years of training to work with the best biathlon coach in the US, Vlad Cervenka. During his time working closely with Vlad, he went to three world junior championships, won the state cross country ski championship in MN, and won a US national Biathlon rollerski race in the senior field, and raced in numerous IBU cup races.
