Biographical Information
Connor Hellebuyck grew up in Michigan and was introduced to hockey by playing roller hockey with his cousins. Hellebuyck played goalie for his high school hockey team at Walled Lake Northern High and spent his final high school season playing Tier II junior hockey with the Odessa (TX) Jackalopes of the North American Hockey League.
Hellebuyck was not heavily recruited out of high school, and despite not cracking the NHL Central Scouting's list of the top 36 North American goalies eligible for the 2012 NHL Draft, he was selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the fifth round. Helleybuyck on getting drafted: "I wasn’t focused on that, I was focused on playing and taking the next step (to college). But late in the year the (NHL) scouts started coming around and saying: ‘Hey, we want to meet you.’ You know they’re in the stands, and that’s a motivation to play well." Hellebuyck still spent two seasons at UMass-Lowell, where he won the inaugural Mike Richter Award as the top goalie in NCAA Division I in 2014.
After excelling during the 2024-25 season, Hellebuyck was named the winner of the Hart Trophy, given to the NHL's most valuable player, becoming the first American-born goaltender to ever win the award. Hellebuyck also won his third Vezina Trophy, given to the NHL's best goaltender that season, and his second-consecutive William M. Jennings Trophy, presented annually to the goalies who play a minimum of 25 games for the team allowing the fewest goals during the regular season.
Hellebuyck has played for the U.S. men's hockey team at three world championships, winning bronze in 2015. Hellebuyck was the starting goalie for the U.S. at the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off. He was the only member of Team USA who didn’t play in the USHL, World Juniors, or for the U.S. National Team Development Program. He was named to his first Olympic roster for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.
