Griffin Colapinto Wins, Lakey Peterson Is Second At Surf City El Salvador Pro

Griffin Colapinto posted his second win of the World Surf League season, while Lakey Peterson reached her second final and ultimately finished second as the Surf City El Salvador Pro wrapped up on Friday in Punta Roca. 
The 23-year-old Colapinto defeated top-ranked Filipe Toledo of Brazil in the men’s final with a best-two-wave total score of 17.0. Toledo had the highest scoring single wave score of 9.57, but with his next best coming in at 6.43 his final score of 16.0 fell short.
With the win, Colapinto earned 10,000 points in the standings and jumped from seventh place up to third, roughly 8,000 behind first-place Toledo. This is the second competition Colapinto has won this season, following a victory in Portugal in March. 
Colapinto was the only American man to make it to the quarterfinals. He defeated Olympic silver medalist Kanoa Igarashi of Japan there — with a total score of 17.60, his best of the competition — before taking down Gabriel Medina of Brazil in the semifinals. 
Colapinto is coming off a career-best sixth-place finish on last year’s WSL tour.
Peterson narrowly missed out on making the cut for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, where surfing was competed for the first time in the Games. Carissa Moore, who ended up winning gold, and Caroline Marks beat her out in 2019 to secure a spot on the Olympic team.
All three reached the quarterfinals in El Salvador, and no U.S. woman advanced as far as Peterson.
In the quarterfinals Thursday, Peterson narrowly defeated fellow American Courtney Conlogue by 0.34 points, posting a total score of 12.77. Conlogue put up a 6.0 and 6.43 on her fourth and fifth waves. Peterson needed a 7.07 to advance to the semifinal and put up a 7.40 on her seventh and final wave. 
The 27-year-old Peterson faced off with the No. 2 Johanne Defay of France in the semifinals on Friday, where Peterson won with a total score of 12.70 to Defay’s 9.67. Over seven waves, Peterson posted three scores in the sixes, while Defay’s top wave scored 5.50. 
The Santa Barbara, California, native faced off against seventh-ranked Stephanie Gilmore of Australia in the final. Gilmore posted a total score of 13.0, beating Peterson’s 10.67. Gilmore not only won the competition, but she posted the highest total round as well with a 16.20 in the quarterfinals. 
Gilmore received 10,000 points in the tour standings and jumped from seventh to third. Peterson’s 7,800 points for finishing second boosted her from sixth to fifth. Moore, of Honolulu, Hawaii, remains in first place with 36,840 points. 
This is Peterson’s second second-place finish on the tour this year, matching her result from Portugal in March. In her previous nine seasons on the tour, Peterson has ended among the top 10 seven times, with a career-best second-place finish in 2018.
The WSL Championship Tour continues June 23-30 with the Oi Rio Pro in Brazil.
