Mallory Weggemann says she’ll never be able to fully move on from her 2008 paralysis, but through swimming she began to find her way, ultimately to the top of the Paralympic swimming podium.
That’s the story Weggemann tells in her new book, “Limitless: The Power of Hope and Resilience to Overcome Circumstance,” released March 2.
“Swimming opened up a new life for me — it allowed me to imagine the possibilities rather than focusing on the limitations,” Weggemann said in a press release. “I don’t like to say that swimming allowed me to move on, because I can never move on from my paralysis; it will always be a part of me. I prefer to say that swimming helped me find a way forward — to build a new reality limited only by my own decisions, resolutions, and mindset.”
Weggemann was always a swimmer, co-captaining her high school team and setting eight world records. She was paralyzed from the waist down following a medical procedure when she was a freshman in college, but quickly returned to swimming and competition and by 2012 was in the Paralympic Games. Weggemann won the gold medal in the 50-meter butterfly and a bronze medal in the 4x400 medley.
One of the themes Weggemann discusses in the book is that unexpected challenges will happen in life, but success can be unexpected too in the way that it comes.
“Your world may never return to what it was prior to your sudden moment of impact, and your life might be forever changed, “Weggemann said, “but maybe, just maybe, it is this very hardship that will carry you forward beyond anything that you dared dream possible.”
Weggemann has gone on to set 15 world records and 34 American records and won 15 world championship medals. Weggemann has interests out of the pool as well, co-founding a production studio called TFA Group and working as a motivational speaker.
