Quick Facts
- In 2005, U.S. Air Force staff sergeant Sebastiana Lopez-Arrellano was riding her motorcycle in Charleston, South Carolina when an animal ran across the road, causing her to swerve into a curb and crash. The impact severed her right leg and ultimately was amputated above the knee. She also had severe hand function trauma in both hands. She went to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland and was in a coma for about a month. During her recovery, her recovery care coordinator encouraged her to go to an Air Force Wounded Warrior adaptive sports camp. She found comfort in sports and fitness, earning invitations to the Invictus and Warrior Games where she competed in wheelchair racing, wheelchair rugby, hand cycling, shooting and sitting volleyball
