The Short List

  • 2006 Olympic bronze medalist
  • Member of the silver medal 2002 U.S. Olympic Team in women's ice hockey
  • Youngest member (age 16) of the 2001-02 USA Hockey Women's National Team
  • Led the Syracuse Stars to the 2001 USA Hockey Girls' 19-and-Under National Championship

Did You Know?

  • Wall is just a junior in high school in 2001-02. Besides hockey, she also plays softball and is an all-star catcher
  • While training with the U.S. National Team in preparation for the Olympics, she is completing her class via the internet with her mother as her courier. Many of the older teammates, some of which are Ivy League students or grads, act as her pseudo teacher
  • If Team USA wins the Olympic gold medal in Salt Lake, Wall would become the youngest Olympic hockey gold medallist at 16 years, 285 days old. The current title is held by Finland's Emma Laaksonen, who won a bronze in 1998 when she was 16 years and 62 days

It's Every Day
Wall's performance at USA Hockey women's development camps in July 2001 caught the attention of U.S. Olympic coach Ben Smith. Impressed by her size and overall hockey abilities, he invited her to try out for the national team a month later in Lake Placid; after which she was named to the initial 25-woman pre-Olympic roster, and later to the 20-woman Olympic Team.

Quote
About learning she made the final cut for the 2002 U.S. Olympic Team: "When he named the two people he was cutting, I was in shock; my jaw dropped, my heart dropped ... This is probably the happiest day of my life. I'm still in shock."
