Biographical Information

John Shuster grew up in Chisholm, Minnesota, and picked up curling at age 12, after hanging around his father Tom's Thursday night league games. Six years later, Shuster would make his international debut representing Team USA at the world championships. Three years later, still as the lead for Pete Fenson's team, Shuster would make his Olympic debut at the Winter Olympic Games Turin 2006, where the U.S. men's curling team won a bronze medal, the first Olympic medal in the sport for Team USA.

John Shuster would qualify for the next two Winter Olympics, this time as the skip of the U.S. men's team, but never finished better than ninth place in round-robin play. After the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi 2014, Shuster was cut from U.S. Curling's high-performance program, which helped fund and train top American athletes. In response, he formed his own team, nicknamed "The Rejects," with other American curlers not selected for the high-performance program. "The Rejects" would become national champions in 2015, win a bronze medal at the world championships in 2016, and also qualify to represent Team USA at Winter Olympic Games Pyeongchang 2018.

At the Pyeongchang Games, Shuster's clutch double take-out in the eighth end led to the U.S. scoring a decisive five points vs. Sweden and their historic first-ever Olympic gold in curling.

Shuster was named the opening flagbearer for Team USA at the Winter Olympic Games Beijing 2022, where he once again was the skip of the U.S. men's curling team, leading them back to the medal round, finishing fourth.  Shuster hopes to compete in curling through the next home Winter Olympics (Salt Lake City 2034), where he could potentially compete with his two sons on the same team, as both of whom are currently competitive junior curlers.
