Biographical Information

Jake Oettinger grew up in Minnesota and first tried out for hockey at age 9. Three years later, he became a full-time goaltender and joined USA Hockey's National Team Development Program in 2014.

Oettinger was selected in the first round (26th overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft by the Dallas Stars and played three seasons of college hockey at Boston University before beginning his pro career.  Oettinger became the first goalie in the expansion era (since 1967-68) to make his NHL debut in the round leading into the Stanley Cup Final when he played the third period for the Stars in a 3-0 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 2 of the Western Conference Final on Sept. 8, 2020.

Oettigner made his first U.S. senior men’s hockey team at the 2021 IIHF Men's World Championships, in which the U.S. won bronze. Oettinger made his World Championship debut in a 5-1 win over Canada in group play, coming in for relief of an injured starting goalie who got hurt less than five minutes into the game, saving 26 of 27 shots.

Oettinger was named to the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off and was selected a year later for his first Olympic team for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.

Off the ice, Oettinger enjoys golfing and says he uses the same mentality on the golf course in the net: “You have to always be focused on the next shot. You can’t let what has happened affect how you’re playing. You have to put it in the past.”
