As a high school athlete, Hillary Werth was Illinois State Champion in 2004 in the 100-meter hurdles with the second fastest mark in Illinois prep history at the time. Werth graduated from University of California, Los Angeles in 2009 with a B.A. in History – Art History. While at UCLA, Werth was a heptathlete on a full scholarship for track and field and was a three-time Pac-10 Track & Field Championship Team member for the UCLA bruins in heptathlon and javelin. Due to battling injury her entire college career and having to red shirt a season, her college athletic career was cut short. Hillary Werth visited Lake Placid in the spring of 2011 to try bobsled and was asked to race in the America’s Cup event with Elana Meyers, where the team won silver. Werth decided to commit to Bobsledding and made the national team in her rookie season. Before Werth began Bobsledding she was pursuing her M.A. in Art Education at the University of Nebraska, and she hopes to pursue her MFA in sculpting post sliding.

Werth comes from a family boasting athletic achievements. Her brother plays for the Washington National’s and won a world series in 2008 with the Philadelphia Phillies, while her sister is an outside hitter for The Nebraska Husker’s Volleyball team and was the 2010 big 12 defensive player of the year. Werth’s mother, Kim Schofield Werth, competed in the 1976 Olympic Trials for the Long Jump and is the national record holder in the 50-yard dash. Her father, Dennis Werth, won a world series with the New York Yankees in 1981, and Werth’s grandfather, Dick “Ducky” Schofield, won a world series in 1960 with the Pittsburgh pirates. Her uncle, Dickie Schofield, won a world series with the Toronto blue jays in 1993.
