  • Beranbaum began swimming at age 13 in Everett, Washington. She was part of a musical theatre, but grew tired of it and switched to soccer. Her mother thought a fast-moving game with a hard ball was not a good idea, and persuaded her daughter to pursue swimming. She is a resident athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Within her first three years of competitive swimming, she broke U.S. Paralympic records in the 200m free, 50m breast, 200m breast, 100m IM and 200m IM. At the Guadalajara 2011 Parapan American Games in, Beranbaum won gold in the women’s 200m IM and bronze in the 50m fly. Beranbaum was born with achondroplasia and has spoken at schools to spread awareness of achondroplasia
