Personal

One of the most recognized professional cyclists in the world, 10-time Tour de France veteran and four-time Olympian George Hincapie has been a fan favorite of American cycling enthusiasts for over a decade.

Born to Colombian parents, George followed in the footsteps of his father and brother and began racing at the age of 10. After a stunning junior career in which he captured 10 national titles and a pair of World Championship medals, it was clearly evident that George was on his way to becoming one of the most successful cyclists in American history. Specializing in single-day events, George became known as America's top Classics rider, referring to the series of tough single-day races in Northern Europe each spring. Additionally, his support of Lance Armstrong on all seven of his Tour de France victories made George a legend in his own right.

In 2003, George met his wife Melanie, a model and podium girl for the Tour de France, while racing at the Tour. Together, the couple welcomed daughter Julia Paris in 2004.  Off the bike, George spends time contributing to the success of Hincapie Sportswear, a family-owned technical clothing company co-founded by brother Rich.

Point of Interest

  • George is the only rider to support Lance Armstrong throughout all seven of his Tour de France victories (1999-2005) as a member of the U.S. Postal and Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Teams.
  • George is one of only four Americans in history to wear the Yellow Jersey in the Tour de France (Greg LeMond, Lance Armstrong, & David Zabriskie).
  • George is one of 10 Americans to win a stage of the Tour de France, with a victory in stage 15 in 2005.
  • As a member of the Discovery Channel Team at the 2007 Tour de France in which Spain's Alberto Contador won the overall title, Hincapie supported his eighth Tour de France champion - the most of any rider in history.
  • George is part of the development company behind Pla d'Adet, a state-of-the-art performance training village near Greenville, S.C., named after the site of his 2005 Tour de France stage win.
