Bureau took up para-swimming at age 11. A hospital in his hometown of Pittsburgh encouraged him to try a swimming program for children with an impairment. He lost his left hand in a farming accident in 1996. He trains in the pool for two hours every day except Sunday. Three days a week, he lifts weights and has a second swimming session....Son of Marjorie and William Bureau…Has two sisters, Brittany and Heather, and one brother, Luke…Both sisters swam to a top-12 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference…Luke swam competitively for Virginia Tech University…Hobbies include many outdoor activities: hiking, fishing, water sports, boating, off-roading and shooting… He won the Frank Fuhrer Outstanding Performance Award for the Pittsburgh region in 2006.
Joins Jessica Long and Rudy Garcia-Tolson as the only members of the U.S. Paralympic Swimming Team to compete in four Paralympic Games (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016)
