Growing up in Kentucky, Haynes did not discover even downhill skiing until college. After college, she went and worked abroad in Switzerland, where she was able to ski every day for three months. She fell in love with the small-town mountain lifestyle, and decided to relocate to Breckenridge, Colorado. She learned about ski mountaineering as a way to train for running races during the winter.
