Biographical Information
At just five years old, Birk Irving was already sliding rails and completing his first 360, displaying the natural talent and fearlessness that would define his career. By age seven, he had landed his first sponsor, signaling the start of a professional trajectory that would take him to the sport's highest levels. Irving initially competed in both halfpipe and slopestyle before focusing on the halfpipe, where he has become a consistent podium threat and one of America's top competitors.
Irving's international breakthrough came at the Youth Olympic Winter Games Lillehammer 2016, where he won gold in the halfpipe. His progression continued through the world cup circuit, where he earned his first bronze medal at the 2021 World Championships. Irving also captured his first X Games medal with a bronze in the superpipe, marking his arrival among the sport's elite.
The 2022 Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 marked Irving's first appearance on the Olympic stage, where he finished fifth in the men's halfpipe. Following Beijing 2022, Irving enjoyed a career-defining season in 2022-2023, capturing the FIS Halfpipe Ski World Cup Crystal Globe.
Irving’s runs are characterized by technical difficulty and amplitude, featuring combinations that include switch left double 1080s, right side double 1260s, double 1440s, and his signature double flat spin 720—a unique pretzel flip that sets him apart from competitors. Irving's home-turf performances have been particularly memorable, including his dramatic comeback victory at the 2022 U.S. Grand Prix at Copper Mountain.
Beyond competitive skiing, Irving enjoys surfing and dreams of being barreled for 30 seconds straight. His favorite food is Mexican, and when not in the halfpipe, he loves skiing and snowmobiling in the backcountry with his sister Svea and friends. With his father's support from Winter Park and a tight-knit skiing family behind him, Irving continues to push the boundaries of what's possible in the halfpipe while representing the passion and dedication that defines Colorado's freestyle skiing community.
