Biographical Information

Alex Carpenter was born into a hockey family. Her father, Bobby Carpenter, is an 18-year NHL veteran who was the first U.S.-born player to score 50 goals in a single season. Carpenter grew up playing hockey in New Jersey, where her dad was an assistant coach with the Devils, and after the NHL team practiced, she would take a few shots on goal at NHL Hall of Fame goalie Martin Brodeur. At age 10,  she wrote an essay saying she would be an Olympian, and as Carpenter remembers: “I couldn't even spell Olympics at that time. I think I put a K in it."

Carpenter attended Boston College to play college hockey and left the school as the career leader in points, goals and assists. Carpenter made her IIHF World Championship debut for the U.S. women’s hockey team at the 2013 IIHF Women’s World Championships and has played in 10 world championships, being named the best forward at the 2024 IIHF Women’s World Championships.

Carpenter has also represented the U.S. at four Four Nations Cups, and her selection for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 will mark her third Olympic team. Carpenter was the first overall pick in the 2015 NWHL Draft, and after one season playing for the Boston Pride, she spent four seasons playing in China. She has since returned to play in North America and now plays professionally in PWHL for the Seattle Torrent.

In 2023, Carpenter married Steph Klein, one of the first female equipment managers in men’s hockey who worked in both the KHL and AHL.
