The native of Laie, Hawaii studied psychology at San Jose City College.
Surf lettered in football, wrestling and track and field in high school.
He also competed at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin in the 100 meters for American Samoa.
Surf was the California state champion in the decathlon in 2010 and holds the American Samoa national record in the decathlon.
He was first introduced to the sport of bobsled by his decathlete coach.
Being a 220 pound athlete, his coach mentioned bobsled one day during training and it always stuck to the back of his mind.
Surf never took it seriously until after he was done with his track and field career and wanted to still compete at an elite level.
