Coco Gauff is already going for one Grand Slam title this weekend. Why not another?
The 18-year-old phenom and partner Jessica Pegula defeated fellow Americans Taylor Townsend and Madison Keys 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the French Open women’s doubles semifinals Friday in Paris. That sends Gauff-Pegula on to Sunday’s final.
By then, Gauff could already be a Grand Slam champion. She’ll face Poland’s Iga Swiatek for the women’s singles title on Saturday.
Gauff had previously reached one Grand Slam final, when she and partner Caty McNally finished as runners-up in women’s doubles at the 2021 US Open. In reaching the Roland Garros singles final, she became the youngest woman to get that far in a Grand Slam since 2004, when Maria Sharapova did so at Wimbledon at age 17.
Pegula, 28, will be in her first Grand Slam final. The 2020 U.S. Olympian has reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam three times in her career, and she’s done so once in women’s doubles. Her best result to date was reaching the semifinals in mixed doubles at the 2021 US Open.
This is Gauff and Pegula’s first tournament together as a team. As the No. 8 seed, they have lost just one set among their five matches so far.
The Americans will face the winner of No. 14 Lyudmyla Kichenok-Jelena Ostapenko and unseeded Caroline Garcia-Kristina Mladenovic in the final. Their semifinal was suspended due to rain after two sets, with the teams tied at one apiece.
Gauff is seeded 18th in singles, and Swiatek is No. 1.
