Swimmer Michael Andrew Drops An US Open Record At Pro Swim Series Stop

Just weeks ahead of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, Michael Andrew has set the standard.
The 22-year-old from Encinitas, California, swam to a U.S. Open record time in the 100-meter breaststroke Thursday at the TYR Pro Swim Series at Indianapolis. That means his time of 58.67 seconds was the fastest in the U.S. He finished more than two seconds ahead of second place Alex Evdokimov.
Andrew, a rising name in U.S. swimming since turning pro at age 14, making him the youngest U.S. swimmer to make that leap, is aiming for his first Olympic Games this summer in Tokyo. He won his first world championships medal in 2019 as part of the 4x100-meter medley team.
The Minnesota-born, Kansas-raised swimmer native provided a preview for what was to come during Thursday’s preliminary heats when he swam a personal best time of 58.82 seconds, making him the second-fastest U.S. swimmer ever at the distance.
His finals time was just shy of the American record of 58.64 set by Kevin Cordes at the 2017 world championships.
“I think if I had swum this evening as clean as I did this morning, I could have gone 58.3,” Andrew told USA Swimming. “There were a ton of mistakes, I was short on my turn and my foot broke on the surface on the breakout to come home. So there were a few things that I would have liked to have done differently, but I felt really strong. Coming down the stretch, I didn’t think I would be going 58.6, so I’m happy with that.
“I’m a little bummed I didn’t get an American record, that’s what I was going for, but I’m happy with it.”
Andrew will have another opportunity June 13-20, 2021, when the U.S. Olympic Team Trials are held in Omaha, Nebraska.
The Indianapolis meet, the fourth and final in the 2021 Pro Swim Series, continues through Saturday.
