Biographical Information

Zach Werenski grew up in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, and after playing youth hockey in Detroit, played one season with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program in nearby Ann Arbor. Werenski then attended the University of Michigan for two seasons, where he was the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and NCAA First Team All-American in his final season with the Wolverines. 

Werenski was a first-round pick (eighth overall) by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2015 NHL Draft and has played his whole NHL career with the team. 

Werenski made his IIHF World Championship debut with the U.S. in 2019 and was a member of the gold medal team at the 2025 IIHF Men's World Championships. Werenski also played for the U.S. at the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off. 

Werenski had a career season in 2024-25, finishing as the runner-up for the 2025 Norris Trophy. He set Blue Jackets single-season records at the position in points, goals, assists and average ice time.
