Dupree began swimming in 2004, and took up para-swimming in 2007 at the Governor Morehead School for the Blind in Raleigh, North Carolina. He would always go to the pool to watch his older sister's swimming practices, so her coach convinced him to get into the pool and try the sport for himself. He trains in the pool for three and a half hours, and in the gym for two hours, each day. He was diagnosed with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy in October 2006, and lost most of his eyesight over the following six months. He won the 2011 Roger McCarville Male Athlete of the Year Award from the Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame. He received the 2008 Greater Raleigh Sports Council Courage of Character Award....Son of Marlene and Chet Dupree…Has one sister, Sarah…Hobbies include Playing piano, listening to music, collecting swim caps from the places he travels for competitions and cooking… Has been to 27 different countries.
