Tessa Janecke started playing hockey at age 3 in Orangeville, Illinois, because her older brother Cade played hockey. Janecke competed in youth hockey alongside her brother until high school, when she balanced honing her hockey skills at the North American Hockey Academy (NAHA) from October to March with spending the spring in Orangeville, Illinois, where she was a three-time First Team All-State softball player.
Janecke continued her career by playing college hockey at Penn State University, where she set numerous school records, including most career goals, assists, and points.
Janecke was named to the U.S. women's hockey team before the 2023 IIHF World Championships, and at the 2025 IIHF World Championship,s she scored the golden goal as the United States defeated Canada, 4-3, in overtime in the gold medal game. Janecke said after the game: "I just happened to be in the right spot at the right time this time. I saw the turnover at the blue line and just tried to get open on the back door and hope for the best."
Janecke values her time on the U.S. women's hockey team, saying her teammates “bring out the best in me, they teach me how to be a good person on and off the ice, and a role model for the next generation. It’s always cool to be around those people, take in different perspectives and see the way they carry themselves.”
