Tage Thompson was born in Phoenix, Arizona, while his dad, Brent, was playing in the NHL for the Phoenix Coyotes. Tage followed his dad around the U.S. during his playing career and subsequent hockey coaching career as he attended 11 schools while growing up before graduating from Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he had been playing for the United States National Team Development Program.
Thompson, who learned to skate in Connecticut while his father played minor league hockey, attended the University of Connecticut to play college hockey. After leading the nation in power play goals his freshman season, he was drafted in the first round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
Two years later, Thompson was traded to the Buffalo Sabres, where he has spent the majority of his career, and in the 2024-2025 season he led the NHL with the most goals among U.S. players.
Thompson has played for the U.S. men’s hockey team at three world championships and has won a medal each time. At the 2025 IIHF World Championships, Thompson scored the golden goal in overtime of a 1-0 win against Switzerland and helped the U.S. win a standalone world title for the first time since 1933.
