    Royal Mitchell competed in track and field at Spartanburg High School, and has gone on to participate in three Paralympic Games, most recently in Beijing. He has earned numerous awards in track and field, including a gold medal at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece.

    Mitchell first became involved in track when he met track coach Jack Todd at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind. It was quickly discovered that Mitchell was a natural sprinter who would go on to be a gold medalist in the 400m at the Sydney Paralympic Games.

    • 2002: Bronze medal, 400m - IPC World Championships, Lille, France
