Personal

Ralph Green didn’t give up after he lost a leg following a random street shooting. Coaches say he’s fearless and a hard worker. Green is the first African-American man to make the U.S. Paralympics Alpine Skiing National Team, and he represented Team USA at both the Torino 2006 and Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games.

A high school quarterback and multi-sport athlete, Green was gunned down at 16 while he and a friend were walking along a street in Brooklyn. His left leg was amputated at the hip. A year later, Green was introduced to skiing in the Poconos, and it didn’t do much for him. In 2000, though, Green found himself back on the slopes with a program in Winter Park, Colo., and as he says, “That’s when it stuck...‘I’m skiing until I’m the best.’” Green is now a 10-time U.S. Paralympics Alpine Skiing National Team member and four-time national champion. He will compete in his third straight Paralympic Winter Games with Team USA in Sochi. Off the slopes, Green enjoys cooking and competes in triathlons for cross-training.
