Biographical Information

In 2013, Patrick Halgren was involved in a serious motorcycle accident that left him in a coma for approximately one month. When he emerged, doctors informed him that his left leg would need to be amputated above the knee. It was Lucas, his twin and closest companion, who pushed him toward para alpine skiing, recognizing that his brother's athletic drive was not going to go quietly. The two even spent the 2016 winter season together at The Remarkables ski resort near Queenstown, New Zealand, where they worked fitting chains and directing car park traffic — sharing time in the mountains they both loved. During this time, he was introduced to Adam Hall, a Paralympic champion, who told Halgren about the Para ski team in Winter Park, Colorado.

In December 2016, Lucas was killed in a motorcycle crash near Mount Cook on the South Island of New Zealand. Patrick has continued to race since, carrying his brother's name and spirit with him onto every course. He competes in the LW2 classification, which covers standing athletes who have undergone above-knee amputation and ski on one leg using outrigger poles for balance.

His first major competition exposure came at the 2018 North Face Frontier 4-star Freeride World Qualifier in Queenstown, where he won the People's Choice Award. In 2021, he was nominated to the Stifel U.S. Para Alpine Ski Team, launching his world cup career. He competed at the 2021 and 2023 world championships, posting a 22nd in slalom and 19th in downhill.

Halgren made his Paralympic debut at the Paralympic Winter Games Beijing 2022, where he competed in slalom and giant slalom in the men's standing division, finishing 24th in slalom and 26th in giant slalom. He has continued to develop his craft at the world championship level, competing at the FIS Para Alpine Skiing World Championships in 2022, 2023 and 2025. At the 2025 world championships, he placed 12th in slalom and 14th in giant slalom.

Known among teammates and in the adaptive sports community as "Powerhouse Pat," Halgren carries a philosophy of relentless effort and an unconditional love for the mountains. He describes his path into this sport as something he was meant to find — a sense of destiny shaped by everything that preceded it, including the grief. Outside skiing, he rollerblades, takes road trips, and by his account, has never lost a costume contest.
