Nathan Gilsleider was born on Wednesday, April 29, 1987 in Claremore, Okla. Gilsleider was an all-state baseball, basketball and soccer player in high school. After graduation, he started his collegiate career at Hesston College in Kansas, where was a member of the Baseball and basketball teams. He eventually transferred to Eastern Oklahoma State College to continue his Baseball career. After tearing his labrum, he ended up at Oklahoma State University and played on the football team. Gilsleider graduated from Oklahoma State with a degree in health promotion and education. Upon graduation, he played one season of arena football for the Oklahoma Defenders. 

He was first introduced to the sport of bobsled by Johnny Quinn.
