• Began swimming at age 7 when a family friend invited him to join a summer league team
• Was born in Kirovohrad, Ukraine, and moved to the United States at age 2 before settling in Minnesota at age 8
• Overcame balance challenges and the absence of stomach muscles through swimming
• Broke 30 seconds in the 50 free at age 8, celebrating with his brother Robin through a family tradition of passing a rubber chicken between them based on who had the faster time
• Draws inspiration from Paralympic legend Jessica Long, Olympic champion Michael Phelps, his parents and coach Jeff Rodriguez
• Away from the pool, enjoys video games, traveling, biking, exploring new places and watching Big Brother and Survivor
