James Southam came back to racing in high school when he got cut from the basketball team and needed to do something for the winter...and he hasn't stopped. After grinding away for 10 years, he finally won his first ski race at age 25. Since that breakthrough, he has been one of the top distance racers in the country, representing the U.S. in the 2006 Olympic Winter Games and the past three World Championships. Skiing is not his whole life - he and his wife, Annie, have a daughter, Hazel.
Southam started skiing in junior nordic races when he was age 5, switching to alpine skiing for 10 years, along with team sports, before he came back to cross-country skiing as a freshman in high school.
