Jackie Young grew up in Princeton, Indiana, where her single mother, Linda, made many sacrifices in raising her and her two siblings. Young reflected on her childhood saying, “She definitely went without to make sure we had food on the table, clothes on our backs, and so I knew if I had the chance to leave early (to go to WNBA) I was going to.”
At five years old, Young started playing basketball with her older brother on a backyard grass plot and lied about her age to join a coed Salvation Army league with him. Following her senior year of high school, she was named Gatorade State Player of the Year, Naismith National Player of the Year and a McDonald’s All-American.
For college, Young stayed in Indiana and attended the University of Notre Dame, where she made the NCAA Championship final in back-to-back seasons, winning the title as a sophomore.
Young left Notre Dame after her junior year and was the first overall pick in the 2019 WNBA Draft by the Las Vegas Aces. Two years later, Young would win her first gold medal for Team USA at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 in women’s 3x3 basketball, a sport that made its Olympic debut at those Games.
In 2022, Young was named the WNBA’s Most Improved Player and helped the Aces win their first title in franchise history. As the Aces won three titles in four seasons, Young also became a mainstay of the women’s national 5-on-5 team as she helped the U.S. record an eighth consecutive gold medal at the Olympic Games Paris 2024. Along with her Team USA teammate Kelsey Plum, they became the first basketball players to win 3x3 and 5-on-5 gold medals in the Olympic Games.
Off the court, Young enjoys shopping and golfing.
