Biographical Information
Ilia Malinin began skating at age six, inspired by his parents, Tatyana Malinina and Roman Skornyakov, both former Olympic figure skaters for Uzbekistan. His early exposure to the sport included his grandfather, a former figure skater for the USSR and youth figure skating coach in Siberia, training him while babysitting him at the ice rink and laid a foundation for his meteoric rise in the Figure Skating world.
After a second place at U.S. nationals and being named an alternate for the Beijing Winter Olympics, Malininwon gold at the 2022 World Junior Championships and previewing his soon-to-be senior-level brilliance. In September 2022, Malinin became the first skater to successfully land the quadruple Axel in an international competition. Later that season, Malinin earned a bronze medal at the 2023 ISU Figure Skating World Championships, and followed by placing first at the 2024 event, highlighting his technical mastery and marking the fastest turnaround from junior to senior world champion in 26 years. He then defended his gold medal in 2025, becoming the first American skater to win back-to-back titles since Nathan Chen's three-peat from 2018-21.
Malinin's signature quad jumps have earned him the nickname "QuadGod" on the ice but his skating is also known for a contemporary feel using music selections from rapper NF, rock band Falling in Reverse, and the soundtrack from the HBO show Succession as part of his previous routines. He also utilizes backflips and his signature move "Raspberry Twist" as fun elements to captivate the audience and judges.
