Gus Schumacher grew up in Anchorage, Alaska, where he learned to ski at a young age and won back-to-back state titles in cross-country skiing before joining the U.S. national team for the 2018-2019 season.
That season, Schumacher was part of the team that won the first-ever relay gold for the U.S. at the FIS Junior World Championships. A year later, Schumacher would repeat with the same team and also made history on his own, becoming the first American to win a junior world title in an individual event (10km classic).
Schumacher made his Olympic debut at the Winter Olympic Games Beijing 2022, where he competed in three events and finished ninth in the relay with fellow Alaskan and junior teammate Luke Jager.
In February 2024, two years after his Olympic debut, Schumacher became the youngest American to win a World Cup race at 23 years old, and the first American man to win a World Cup race in 11 years, when he won a 10 km freestyle event in Minneapolis.
Outside of his passion for skiing, Gus graduated from the University of Alaska Anchorage with an engineering degree in the spring of 2024. He is also heavily involved with Protect Our Winters (POW), including testifying before Congress on behalf of the organization.
