After serving as team captain of the U.S. Paralympic Women’s Sitting Volleyball Team at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece, Gina McWilliams remained with the team to compete in the 2008 Games. As the oldest member of Team USA, McWilliams brought a great deal of experience and helped them claim the silver medal. McWilliams was also a member of Team USA when they brought home the silver medal at the 2010 Sitting Volleyball World Championships.

McWilliams lost her right leg below the knee as the result of a car accident 16 years ago.  As she delved into the world of adaptive sports (competing in wheelchair tennis, wheelchair softball, water skiing, snow skiing, amputee golf, and wheelchair basketball), she was continually in search of volleyball opportunities for disabled women. She finally found them when asked to attend the first ever women’s sitting volleyball camp, held at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., in February 2003.

McWilliams has been a member of the U.S. Paralympics Women’s Sitting Volleyball National Team ever since.
