Fred Kerley is one of the most versatile and accomplished sprinters in U.S. track and field history. Known for his exceptional speed across multiple distances, Kerley has achieved remarkable success in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter events.
Kerley's performances, including his gold medal in the 100-meter at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, have solidified his status as one of the world's premier sprinters. His senior career has been marked by consistent excellence and versatility across sprint events. His ability to compete at the highest level in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter has made him an invaluable asset to the U.S. national track and field team.
Olympic History
During Kerley's Olympic debut, he secured individual and relay medals in the marquee sprint event. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Kerley won a silver medal in the 100-meter final. In the same Tokyo 2020 Games, he competed in the 200-meter event. During the semi-finals, he achieved a personal milestone by running under 20 seconds for the first time.
Kerley’s second Olympic appearance came at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where he earned a bronze medal in the 100-meter final, medaling alongside his American counterpart Noah Lyles.
World Championships
Fred Kerley has won multiple medals at world championships since 2017. At the 2017 World Championships in London, he earned a silver medal in the 4x400-meter relay final. At the 2019 World Championships in Doha, he earned gold in the 4x400-meter relay final, and bronze in the 400-meter final.
In Eugene 2022, Kerley achieved his most significant individual victory, winning gold in the 100-meter with a time of 9.86 seconds. He also earned silver in the 4x100-meter relay final. The following year, at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, he won gold as part of the 4x100-meter relay team.
Early Career
Fred Kerley attended Taylor High School where he initially focused on basketball before turning to track and field. He then attended South Plains College, where he began to make a name for himself in track, before transferring to Texas A&M University.
At Texas A&M, Kerley's talent truly blossomed. He won multiple NCAA titles and set collegiate records in the 400-meter. His breakout professional season came in 2017 when he won the U.S. national title in the 400-meter and earned a silver medal at the world championships in London.
Kerley's decision to shift his focus from the 400-meter to shorter sprints in 2021 marked a significant turning point in his career.
