Biographical Information
Chase Blackwell began his competitive journey at an early age, strapping into his first snowboard at 3 years old. By age 8, Blackwell was training under coach Jim Smith, who introduced him to various riding styles before the young athlete gravitated toward halfpipe. His dedication to the sport intensified after attending X Games Aspen as a child with his father, watching legends like Shaun White compete and dreaming of one day joining them on the world stage.
Blackwell's path to elite competition was tested in 2014 when he suffered a serious injury at Copper Mountain's halfpipe that left him unconscious with a broken clavicle, humerus and scapula. Rather than derailing his career, the injury fueled his competitive fire. Within weeks of returning to the snow, he had recovered his tricks and adopted a charging mentality that would define his approach to the sport. In 2015, he earned a third-place finish at the FIS Junior World Championships in Yabuli, China, and won Rookie Fest in Oslo, Norway.
Blackwell's progression continued as he moved from the U.S. Snowboard Rookie Team to the Pro Team in 2018, accumulating several top 10 world cup finishes since then. In 2021, Blackwell captured the U.S. National Championship as the top American finisher on the world cup circuit, finishing fifth at the U.S. Grand Prix in Aspen while competing against Olympic legend Shaun White. His career-defining moment came in February 2023 when he earned his first world cup podium with a third-place finish at the U.S. Grand Prix at Mammoth Mountain, scoring 84.00 with a run that featured massive amplitude and technical prowess. He followed that performance with a fifth-place finish at the Calgary Snow Rodeo, climbing to seventh in the FIS world rankings.
Blackwell made his X Games debut in 2020 at Buttermilk. Known for his signature switch backside 7 Japan, Blackwell brings a distinctive style to the halfpipe that he describes as both "sleepy" and dangerous—smooth and effortless yet edgy and high-stakes. The Colorado rider considers Copper Mountain his home mountain and splits his time between Longmont and training locations throughout Colorado. His family, including his parents Tracy and Stacey and two sisters, are all snowboarders who have supported his journey from the earliest days. As he continues to compete at the highest level of the sport, Blackwell remains connected to his roots, occasionally working for his father's framing business and giving back to fans who have followed his ascent from local talent to international competitor.
