The Macugas signed up their kids for Youth Sports Alliance, a legacy of the Winter Olympic Games Salt Lake City 2002 that provides affordable access to winter Olympic sports for children in the region. Alli gravitated toward moguls while her older sisters, Sam and Lauren, forged their own paths to the U.S. national team in ski jumping and alpine skiing.
Macuga started her career as a four-time junior world medalist, including winning two gold medals at the 2023 world junior championships in dual moguls and mixed moguls team (non-Olympic event).
Macuga made her first World Cup start in December 2022 and was named the 2022-23 FIS Rookie of the Year. The next season, Macuga would follow up with her first year success with the first two FIS World Cup podiums of her career and finish the season ranked fifth in the world.
The following season, Macuga struggled with post-concussion syndrome aggravated by an offseason head injury suffered while training. She lost her focus and vision on the course, and the inability to tell a jump from a bump on the mogul course made her “scared to mogul ski.” Macuga did not take any time off, and based on performance (the U.S. can only start a certain number of competitors on the World Cup level), ended up finishing the season on the Nor-Am Tour, where she would win her second dual moguls title in the last three seasons.
Since the injury, Macuga has been very vocal about her return to mogul skiing and about the difficulties of recovering from post-concussion syndrome compared to physical injuries.
