Growing up in Spain, Montilla was introduced to field hockey in  first grade and fell in love with the sport immediately. He began playing for his school’s team and moved on to play for a club later on (Club Hockey Pozuelo, Madrid). Montilla represented the province of Madrid at the youth level several times and competed in multiple national championships. After moving to the United States in 2012, he found a new hockey family in Los Angeles playing for Bulldogs Field Hockey Club. Since then Montilla has joined the Junior and Senior U.S. Men's National Teams and competed internationally for both.
