Chase Ealey, Devon Allen Continue To Shine With Diamond League Wins In Oslo

With one week to go before the USATF Outdoor Championships, shot putter Chase Ealey is looking ready to go after another strong performance to win the women’s event at Thursday’s Diamond League stop in Oslo.
Coming off a silver medal at the indoor world championships in March and a Diamond League victory in May in Doha, Qatar, Ealey bested the field in Norway with a personal best throw of 20.13 meters, which she achieved on his final attempt. Ealey’s winning throw was more than half a meter better than second-place Jessica Schilder, who set a Dutch record at 19.46 meters.
Fellow American Maggie Ewen was seventh with a best throw of 18.22.
Ealey has now set personal records in each of her last three meets — ideal timing with the USATF Outdoor Championships coming up June 23-26 in Eugene, Oregon. That meet will determine the U.S. team that returns to Eugene for the world championships three weeks later.
“The trials will be very tough,” Ealey said in quotes released by the Diamond League, “but I need to ensure I make the team for the worlds on home turf.”
Ealey previously qualified for the 2019 world championships and finished seventh, but underscoring the competitive nature of the U.S. championships she was fifth at last summer’s U.S. Olympic Team Trials and missed out on the Tokyo Games.
Ealey was one of two Americans to win in Oslo, with few U.S. athletes taking part in the event coming so close to nationals. Devon Allen was the other, taking first in the men’s 110-meter hurdles.
A two-time Olympic finalist in the event, Allen is set to join the Philadelphia Eagles later this summer in hopes of restarting his career as a wide receiver. He had starred at the University of Oregon before switching his attention to the hurdles.
Training for two sports this summer hasn’t slowed him down on the track.
Allen ran a scorching 12.84 to win the event Sunday at the USATF NYC Grand Prix in New York. That made Allen the third fastest high hurdler of all time.
Though he wasn’t quite as fast running into a headwind on Thursday, Allen’s time of 13.22 was enough to hold off second-place Asier Martínez of Spain by .08. Fellow American Aaron Mallett was fourth in 13.40.
Reigning Olympic champion Valerie Allman took second in the women’s discus.
She had three throws over 65 meters, with a best of 65.91, but that wasn’t quite enough to overcome Croatia’s Sandra Perkovic, who won with a best throw of 66.82. Perkovic won the Olympic gold medal in the event in 2012 and 2016 before finishing fourth in Tokyo.
Two other U.S. Olympians were just off the podium in their respective 5,000-meter races, with Joe Klecker (13:04.92) taking fourth in the men’s race and Alicia Monson (14:31.11) fifth in the women’s.
The Diamond League continues Saturday in Paris, although again few Americans are entered in the competition as they prepare for the national championships.
