Mewis Sisters Score All Four Goals In Friendly Win Over Colombia
by Todd Kortemeier

Samantha Mewis celebrates with her teammates after scoring her second goal of the first half against Colombia at Exploria Stadium on Jan. 18, 2021 in Orlando, Florida.
Playing together is working out pretty well for the Mewis sisters.
Sam Mewis, the 2020 U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year, scored her first international hat trick and her older sister Kristie capped the scoring in a 4-0 win over Colombia Monday night in Orlando, Florida. Kristie also scored in the last match the sisters played together, in November against the Netherlands. She now has three international goals, and Sam has 21.
Sam Mewis had some help from a pair of legends on both of her first-half goals. Megan Rapinoe found Mewis from the left wing in acres of space to slot home the opener in the fourth minute. Then in the 33rd minute, it was Carli Lloyd, receiving a cross from Lindsay Horan at the far post and heading back across the face of goal for Mewis to head in her second. Lloyd and Rapinoe, both Olympic and Women’s World Cup champions, were making their first appearances for the national team since March 2020.
But Mewis wasn’t done. Inside of the first minute of the second half, Horan won a penalty kick. Mewis stepped up to take it and complete the hat trick with a shot to the low left corner. Mewis later made way for her Manchester City teammate Rose Lavelle at the same time Kristie came on. It was Lloyd that found Kristie in the 85th minute with space in the box, leaving her to fire home the fourth and final goal of the night.
The U.S. enjoyed a majority of possession and chances against a young and shorthanded Colombia side missing four players due to possible contact with a member of its staff who tested positive for COVID-19. With continued negative tests, all four could return for the second of the friendlies on Friday night, again in Orlando. Team USA has now won six of seven matches all time against Colombia.
Monday’s match was one day shy of two years since the U.S. women last lost, a streak of 33 games. The U.S. has won all 12 matches it has played under manager Vlatko Andonovski, the best start to a managerial career in program history. Andonovski is expected to make several lineup changes for Friday’s match as he continues to evaluate his roster for this summer’s Olympic Games.
