Phil Mahre was voted the greatest male American skier of all time by the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Association in 2002. Born in Yakima, Washington, Mahre won a silver medal at the Olympic Winter Games Lake Placid 1980, and a gold medal at the Sarajevo 1984 Games, both in the slalom event. At just 18 years old, Mahre was named to the U.S. National Ski Team after graduating high school and became the first American to win the all-around world cup title in 1981. Mahre’s twin brother, Steve, won the slalom silver medal at the Sarajevo 1984 Games. Mahre captured the men’s all-around world cup title across three consecutive years, a feat achieved by only two other skiers in history at that time. His 27 world cup race wins are the second-highest total by an American male. The Olympian retired from competitive skiing in 1985 and co-founded a ski training center with his brother in Deer Valley, Utah.
