Atlanta 1996, Gold

The 1996 U.S. Olympic Women’s Soccer Team won the inaugural gold medal in women's soccer at the Olympic Games Atlanta 1996. With an undefeated record of 4-1-0 (wins-draws-losses), Team USA steamrolled its way to victory, defeating Norway and China among others in pursuit of gold. Coached by Tony DiCicco, the team had played together throughout the 1990s, resulting in an incredible on- and off-field chemistry. Earlier in the tournament, the U.S. defeated Norway thanks to a goal by Shannon MacMillan in sudden-death overtime. Team USA’s only draw during the Games came against China, the team they faced once again in the finals. They played in front of 76,481 fans during the gold-medal match in Athens, Georgia, the most spectators to attend a female sporting event worldwide at the time. MacMillan and Tiffeny Milbrett each scored a goal during the match as Team USA defeated China, 2-1, to win the first women’s soccer gold medal in Olympic Games history.
