Biographical Information

Summers Sanders grew up in Roseville, California, and began swimming at age three when her mother signed her up for lessons. By age 11, she attended her first Olympics, the Olympic Games Los Angeles 1984, as a spectator with her father.

Four years later, Sanders just missed making her first U.S. Olympic team by 0.27 of a second when she finished third in the 200-meter individual medley. After high school, Sanders attended Stanford University, where she was a nine-time NCAA champion and led the Cardinal to the 1992 NCAA National Championship in women’s swimming.

Later that year, Sanders made her Olympic debut at the age of 19 at the Olympic Games Barcelona 1992. Sanders won two gold medals in the 200-meter butterfly and as part of the U.S. women’s team in the 4x100-meter medley race, and also took home silver in the 200 IM and bronze in the 400 IM.

After retiring from swimming, Sanders worked in television as a commentator and host for over thirty years. She has covered numerous sports, including swimming and also co-hosted NBA Inside Stuff for nearly a decade.

Sanders is married to fellow Olympian Erik Schlopy. They have two kids, Skye and Spider.
